This February, Schenectady Light Opera revives this beautiful, classic tale with a message still relevant today – that hate and fear and ignorance are learned.
Director Peter Caracappa says the show was way ahead of its time. “ I think it's the best show of its era and carries a message that still resonates even today,” Caracappa says.
The show's message is wrapped in two beautiful love stories and told through some of Rodgers and Hammerstein's best known songs.
“It's beautiful music,” says Caracappa, “so much of which has become part of the standard American songbook. Many are songs well known but there is something special about experiencing them in the context of the story that they were written for.”
The talented cast includes Steven Leifer as French planter Emile de Becque, Heather-Liz Copps as Ensign Nellie Forbush, Elizabeth Sherwood-Mack as Bloody Mary and Tyler Thomas as Lieutenant Joseph Cable.
